A report released Tuesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention s National Center for Health Statistics shows that life expectancy at birth for the U.S. population in 2019 was 78.8 years, an increase from 78.7 years in 2018. For males, life expectancy increased from 76.2 years in 2018 to 76.3 years in 2019, while it increased from 81.2 years in 2018 to 81.4 years in 2019 for females. The tick up overall came amid an all-time high of more than 2.85 million deaths in the U.S. – a relatively small increase of about 15,600 from 2018 – and despite what a companion CDC report shows was a nearly 5% increase in fatal drug overdoses among U.S. residents.
