In the last decade, HNTB Corp. and Dewberry Companies Inc. have become two of the most recurring names in the DOT s consulting Rolodex when it comes to rockfall projects.
The first rockfall project this duo worked is on a 0.30-mile stretch of Route 80 in Knowlton and Hardwick.
HNTB completed the concept development study for this project in 2011, and Dewberry was hired in 2013 to begin preliminary engineering. The DOT’s project development process often starts with a problem statement, followed by a concept development plan, then preliminary engineering and final design, and finally construction.
HNTB s 300-page concept development report took about a year to complete. It outlined a nine-month, $4 million to $6 million plan, known as the preliminary preferred alternative, or PPA. HNTB, based in Missouri, was paid about $222,000 for the work.
