Alexander Campbell, 29, pleaded guilty Monday to two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Bridgewater (Virginia) College Officer John Painter and Campus Safety Officer J.J. Jefferson
Police say he tried to avoid arrest by jumping off the south side of the bridge into the James River. He reportedly dropped about 60 feet into the water.
Residents of the other side of the duplex and other homes nearby had been evacuated by firefighters. Arlington County Fire Chief David Politz said. No neighbors were injured.
The incident began when officers conducted a wellbeing check on a man in southeast Roanoke when they discovered the man stabbed to death in his home. Officers believe that the stabbing occurred a few days prior.
In a lawsuit filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Central California, the teen’s aunt, Mychelle Blandin, sued the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the killer’s estate for damages over negligent hiring.
