The first round of the Toyota Gazoo Racing Festival Season 4, which was supposed to be held on January 28-30 but was postponed due to the movement control order (MCO), is finally going to happen. The new date is March 27-28 at the Sepang International Circuit.
UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) says that the event will conform to strict standard operating procedures (SOPs), operating under a sports bubble amidst the Covid-19 threat. As such, Round 1 of the Vios Challenge will be held as a closed- door event with racing fans invited to what is being billed as the biggest live-streamed racing carnival in Malaysia aired over two days.

Malaysians love “sport”. We can tell from the many souped up regular cars on the road, whether DIY or optioned at the showroom. The carmakers know this as well, and have been profiting from it while fulfilling demand. Our penchant for all things sporty has even influenced local design – see the deeply cut and sharp bumpers of the Perodua Bezza for instance.
Most of the time, it’s just aesthetics, but this Toyota Vios GR-S is rather comprehensive for a sporty variant. Sure, there are “fierce” looks, but our market’s first GR Sport car sees changes to the powertrain and chassis as well, plus some interior enhancements that can’t be done at Brothers. We need things to aspire to, dreams. Reality might be very different, but the power of dreams is not to be underestimated. Everything starts from a dream. Pun intended, because there’s never a day that you don’t see red Honda badges or Type R-inspired kits on the roads. Modified today, real Type R tomorrow, that’s the dream.
Toyota’s Gazoo Racing is not there yet in terms of brand recognition and number of fans, but with cars like the made-for-WRC GR Yaris and local efforts such as the Vios GR-S, the annual Toyota Gazoo Racing Festival and the Vios Challenge one-make race, the Big T’s ambitions are clear. Toyota would love to have people wanting GR, wanting the badge.

The fourth season of the Toyota Gazoo Racing Festival, set to kick off in January 2021, will see the Vios Challenge grow to include more celebrity drivers, plus the addition of a new Rookie Class for young drivers.
There will also be a new format with three race series – Toyota Vios Challenge, GR Vios Sprint Cup, and GR Vios Enduro Cup. A total of 11 races will take place throughout the year, with the combined prize money amounting to RM420,000.
Anchoring the TGR Festival is none other than the popular Toyota Vios Challenge. The one-make race will feature three rounds and six races, while the GR Vios Sprint Cup will see two rounds and four races being held. The GR Enduro Cup, meanwhile, will be run in conjunction with the Sepang 1000km Endurance Race.
