welcome to the beat. ari melber. we begin tonight with breaking news. murder charges have been issued for all five memphis police officers former officers for the beating death of tyre nichols. those officers are in custody. the people you see on your screen, now in civilian clothing, booked and incarcerated what would be a murder trial. they are charged with killing this individual through a knowing state of mind, and all five we ll explain the legalities of this accused of contributing directly to the death. this is justin smith, em met martin, desmond mills jr., demetrius and tadarius bean. this is a case that has royaled memphis. it s also a case that chose how law enforcement responses to law enforcement killings are changing. he died three days after being pulled over for what was something that shouldn t have been a violent interaction at all, alleged reckless driving. the d.a. revealing more about what was a confrontation where nichols apparently fled on foot
even though it is donald trump, who has not provided a single shred of evidence proving that they re not, proving that he declassified any of the records that he kept at mar-a-lago for up to 18 months. now to the other front, the special master process itself. just a couple hours ago, lawyers for the justice department squared off with donald trump s legal team for their first public hearing before judge raymond dearie. he was appointed special master to review the documents seized in the search of donald trump s residence last month. during this hearing, dearie, who was donald trump s pick, his hand-selected suggestion to be the special master, told donald trump s lawyers to put up or shut up on claims that trump declassified the records. here s how politico describes the hearing. quote, judge raymond dearie pushed trump s lawyers repeatedly for refusing to back up the former president s claim that he declassified the highly sensitive national security-related records discov
that occurred at mar-a-lago between attorneys representing former president donald trump and agents there, looking to see if there was classified information being stored on the property. and it s this meeting that sort of precipitated the search that was executed at donald trump s residence in palm beach yesterday. we re told from sources who were present at the meeting that at the time that attorneys for donald trump shared documents, turned them over and showed them that there were in fact documents being held at mar-a-lago that had classified markings on them. the agents who were present then asked to see where these documents were being stored. they were taken to a basement room on the property, we re told. and just days after that meeting occurred, they were given they were sent a letter, asking them to create a more secure location for these documents to be held. at trump s property. and we re told that aides to the former president actually then put a padlock on the
