One of the defining characteristics of the late Tony Allenâs drumming was his capacity to switch register at a momentâs notice. His is typically a hard-swinging, syncopated groove that can be sharply interrupted by a burst of air through the hi-hats and a rattling fill on the toms, making us aware of his presence not just as a solid sideman but as a spacious soloist, too.

As the anniversaries of pandemic lockdowns arrive, many of us have been reflecting on the people we ve lost in the past year, whether from COVID or any other cause. If any good can come from all times, I hope we never again take for granted the opportunity to say goodbye or come together to celebrate a life.
Thankfully, when it comes to the latter, we can do it whenever we want. And when it comes to game-changing drummer and composer Tony Allen, who died last spring at age 79 from an abdominal aortic aneurysm, we can also console ourselves with the knowledge that he achieved a sort of immortality during his days with us. Blue Note Records has announced a new posthumous album from late Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen,
There Is No End. The album is set to arrive April 30th, which also marks the one-year anniversary of Allen’s death.
The record announcement comes with the first single, “Cosmosis,” which was co-produced by Allen, Damon Albarn, and Remi Kabaka. The song came out of Allen’s sessions with Albarn and Skepta (who also features on the track) as they finished tracking their collaboration, “How Far?” which appeared on Gorillaz’s 2020 project,
