“The symbolism used in this painting will be a historic reference for decades to come,” the auctioneer said. “The work is by Vincent Devine who was inspired by Vicky’s incredible courage.”
Ms Phelan is depicted in the painting in a semi-translucent state, with a shamrock over her heart, which she has said represents the Irish people who have taken her into their hearts.
Also found in the painting is a bird known as a crimson rosella resting on her right hand, which represents her 15 year old daughter Amelia.
Similarly in her left hand is an oaky leaf, representing her younger son, 9 year old Darragh. It symbolises how he is a sapling now, but will later grow to be big and strong.
A portrait of healthcare campaigner Vicky Phelan has raised just over €58,000 at auction today.
The piece was commissioned by the charity Heroes Aid and all proceeds are going to frontline healthcare workers to assist them during the current pandemic.
The portrait measuring 300cm by 150cm was painted by Tullamore-based artist Vincent Devine.
He said the painting took months to complete and involved bringing Ms Phelan to the beach in Doonbeg in Co Clare to compose the image.
The painting depicts various aspects of her s life from the past to the present and the future.
Mr Devine said: I have tried to covey the tragedies and the joys in her life, all symbolically through the anatomy of her body and in different objects as well.

A PORTRAIT OF CervicalCheck campaigner Vicky Phelan has sold at auction for €46,500, with all proceeds going to healthcare charity, Heroes Aid.
Ms Phelan is currently undergoing an immunotherapy treatment in the US as part of a clinical trial which she hopes will prolong her life and afford her more time with her family.
The artwork by Tullamore artist Vincent Devine tells the story of Ms Phelan’s life in three panels, referencing both her cancer diagnosis and her advocacy work.
