STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. By the time bells start ringing at St. Peter’s R.C. Church in St. George at 1 p.m. each Wednesday, the doors are open. Inside the narthex, without fail each week, volunteers hand out bags of food to anywhere between 150 to 250 Staten Islanders. After 21 years, this feeding machine seems to work seamlessly but the regular crew of 65-plus year old workers worry about carrying on its future they hope for a new generation of helpers.
