According to a study by the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), real wages of gig workers across cities has seen a significant drop despite the volume of orders spiking and food-tech platforms improving their unit economics in the past few years. The survey involving 924 food delivery workers has found that real wages of gig workers has decreased by 11% to Rs 11,963 per month in 2022 in comparison to wages from 2019 due to rise in fuel costs and consumer price inflation.
Since the safety issues with regard to gig workers are being consistently reported, CK Baba, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), southeast division (where the gang of three stole 25 phones), has proposed to introduce a standard operating procedure (SOP) that delivery companies must follow in order to ensure the safety of their partners.
