(JTA) Even in the most challenging circumstances, Irena Veisaite never missed a chance to foster tolerance and understanding.
One of the few Jews to survive the Holocaust in Lithuania, Veisaite’s passion for reconciliation helped defuse a tense moment during an exchange between Poles and Lithuanians at the White Synagogue in Sejny, a Polish town on the border between the two countries that share a long history scarred by tragedy.
In the early 1990s, a group of Poles and Lithuanians gathered at the synagogue for a dialogue organized by the Borderland Foundation, a Sejny-based nonprofit that works to promote intercultural understanding. According to media reports, Veisaite contracted the coronavirus. She was a wonderful, very considerate and inquisitive person who cared about everything that s going on in the world and Lithuania. She loved people very much, was open to everyone, respected everyone and would talk to everyone. She was a person who brought light to everyone, Mikalajunas said.
Veisaite was born into a Jewish family in Lithuania s second-largest city of Kaunas in 1928. She was a prisoner of the Kaunas ghetto during WWII and was hidden and saved from the Holocaust by Lithuanian friends.
