Parts of South America have endured an extreme winter heatwave this week, with one town in Bolivia registering the equal highest winter temperature ever recorded in the Southern Hemisphere. A large blocking high pressure system over the South Atlantic Ocean caused a hot air mass to build over the northern half of South America over the past fortnight. Earlier this week, this pool of hot air spread into central parts of South America as northerly winds developed ahead of an approaching low pressure trough.
