The strongest of over half a dozen jolts struck South Shetland Islands 216 kilometers northeast of Chile s O Higgins scientific base at 8:36pm, while another 5.8 quake shook the Chile-Argentina border region close to the capital, Santiago around 30 minutes later. While the warning was only meant for the coastal regions of Antarctica, people all across Chile received messages urging them to abandon coastal areas due to a tsunami threat, triggering much confusion.

By Hanie Abdul Razak|   Published: 23rd December 2020 3:17 pm IST The coronavirus has now reached every continent of the earth as Chile’s armed forces announced this Monday that 36 people have tested positive for the virus at its Gen Bernardo O’Higgins Riquelme Antarctic base. They said the positive cases include 26 army personnel and 10 civilians of a maintenance contract company.  Afterwards, on Tuesday, the Health Minister for the Biobio region said there are 21 personnel on a navy supply vessel headed to Antarctica called the Sergeant Aldea that tested positive. 

COVID-19 reaches Antarctica, pandemic now on every continent

TORONTO The novel coronavirus has now spread to every continent on Earth. Three dozen people have reportedly contracted COVID-19 at a Chilean research base in Antarctica, which was for months the only landmass untouched by the global pandemic. According to several Spanish-language reports on Monday, the positive cases include mostly members of the Chilean Army as well as 10 maintenance contractors at the Bernardo O’Higgins research base on the northernmost point of the Antarctic Peninsula. Last week, a Chilean newspaper reported that the government was aware of positive COVID-19 test results among members of a group that travelled to Antarctica.
