In 2027, another Latvian city will be given this honour, and no fewer than nine regional centers have thrown their hats into the ring. In the lead up to the big decision in June, Riga-based journalist and tour guide Philip Birzulis examines the cultural credentials of each of the hopefuls.
As a result of wartime devastation, Valmiera isn’t the most easy-on-the-eye place in Latvia. But in spite of its dowdy appearance, this northern city punches well above its weight in sports, education and even gastronomy.
