Sugar mills in Maharashtra and Karnataka are preparing for a battle to secure as much sugarcane as possible. Karnataka has set an official date to begin sugar production and will take legal action against mills that do not comply. Meanwhile, the sugar industry in Maharashtra is divided over the best time to start production in order to maximize the chances of obtaining a larger share of the reduced supply of raw material. This situation is causing concern among officials.
Erratic and uneven rainfall this year has affected sugarcane and rice cultivation in the country, which means less will be available for the distilleries. State-run Food Corporation of India (FCI) has already stopped supply of rice for ethanol production owing to an expected shortfall of rice for general consumption.
