Republicans feasted on steak and high hopes for the 2024 elections at the Vigo County Republican Party’s annual Lincoln Day Dinner fundraiser Monday night at Logan’s Rib-Eye.
Republicans took control of the Vigo County Council on Wednesday and picked up a candidate for sheriff when Aaron Loudermilk, president of the council, switched parties.
Senate Bill 389 would put up to 80% of the remaining wetlands in the state at risk of permanent elimination. It would also remove costly mitigation requirements for developers.
Opponents say that doing away with the protections could increase flooding, degrade water quality and destroy wildlife habitat. More than 40 organizations have opposed the bill, some have raised ethics concerns and Gov. Eric Holcomb, who has expressed unease about the environmental impact, allowed his state environmental and natural resource agencies to oppose the measure during a recent hearing.
That bears repeating: The Republican governor has expressed unease with a bill moving through the Republican-controlled legislature, and has allowed state agencies, which rarely take a position on pending legislation, to oppose it.

Vigo County Commissioner Brad Anderson on Monday thought he was about to attend an internet meeting with Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb.
Instead, the governor used the opportunity, via Zoom, to present Anderson with the Sagamore of the Wabash, the highest honor an Indiana governor regularly bestows, second only to the Sachem, which is given, at most, to one person each year. This was all about the (award) presentation, so it was not a meeting, so they kind of tricked me on that, Anderson said with a chuckle. It was neat. He had a lot of nice things to say about me, even.
