Vietnam Detects UK, South African Variants in Imported Cases from Cambodia

Health authorities and state media in Vietnam said COVID-19 samples taken from imported cases from Cambodia have shown the presence of the UK and South African variants of the virus.
Vietnam’s Health Ministry reported on Monday that Minister Nguyen Thanh Long was visiting the southern city of Can Tho to prepare an 800-bed field hospital in preparation for a potential cluster originating out of Cambodia, on account of illegal border crossings.

The call was made amid the complicated developments of the COVID-19 pandemic in the neighbouring country when the numbers of infections and deaths have continued to rise since the “February 20 community incident”.
The Cambodian Government has locked down Phnom Penh capital city as well as Ta Khmao and Preah Sihanouk cities, while applying social distancing in many areas, and closing many markets, factories and production facilities, causing great difficulties to both Cambodian people and Vietnamese Cambodians in the country.

Seven Vietnamese people trying to unlawfully enter Cambodia from Thailand have been arrested by Cambodian authorities, according to the Vietnamese diplomatic mission in Cambodia.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Vu Quang Minh, Vietnam’s Ambassador to Cambodia, on Monday afternoon said that the Vietnamese Consulate General in Battambang was presiding over the coordination with Cambodian authorities, the Vietnamese Embassy in Phnom Penh, and other Vietnamese agencies to handle the case, which happened on Sunday night.
