[ music ] Untold Stories saluting our Vietnam Veterans, continues now. Christmas in a hospital. How strange it seemed to be. Its not a physical ailment, but an ailment thats called ptsd. 46 years later, Doug Alexander still carries the burden of war. Alexander is a vietnam veteran who wrote this poem by receiving treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder. He is also my uncle. I know. Those people died. Over there. Fighting a war that. Really none of us. Understood why we were there. But we were sent there to do a job, and we were trying to do it. And i know that those people tried just as hard as the next guy. But they didnt make it. And that bothers me. The year was 1969, and the country had already invested 15 years into vietnam. My uncle was 19 and more than a year into his army enlistment, when he was given orders to head to vietnam. He would soon be on the ground in tein minh. And i asked them, why do they call it rocket city . He said, cause they get rocketed three times a day
You dont want to climb to the top of the mountain without a healthy ego but his goes in very many odd directions. Theres something not psychologically right about him. Are you going to ask him about china or are you going to spend the morning trashing nixon . Well, i just mentioned china a minute ago. I just said much of the book is dealing with china and the china opening. The big deal about that is that it was a three way deal. Soviet union, china. The United States. He was trying to wedge china away from the soviets. So much so he thought if you bomb a lot in vietnam, it would impress the chinese about your toughness. It had a deterrent quality to it that it would deter adventurism of them into hong kong or taiwan or japan and yet at the same time he would back pakistan. Nixon was a huge admirer of the country of pakistan. That was a proxy state of china. They were fighting india and nixon couldnt stand the country of india because they were close to the soviets. Nixon hates russia,
History. This month marks 40 years since operation baby lift. The emergency evacuation of children out of vietnam as the war came to an end. In april 1975, ktvu reporter claude man climbed aboard an Airways Plane carrying children from vietnam. Entering San Francisco at the presidio. The children were on their way to oregon. From a war ravaged country where food was scarce, many of the children suffered from malnutrition. Others were sick. One child clutched a dog tucked into his sap satchel. None of them knew where they were going. Its not clear how many of the children brought to the u. S. As orphans had parents who hoped to join them later. But on this april 23rd flight, 45 of the children were placed with relatives in the United States. In all, some 2,500 children were brought from vietnam to the u. S. In just over a month. About half of those children passed through the presidio when they first arrived in the United States. President gerald ford met the first plane when it arrived
