Laos, Thai prime ministers agree to strengthen friendly ties

VIENTIANE, Jan 25 (Vientiane Times/ANN): Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith ( pic) has held talks via a phone link with Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-O-Cha as part of efforts to strengthen the friendly ties between the neighbouring countries. According to a report from the Lao News Agency, General Prayuth praised the success of the recent Eleventh Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party and congratulated Mr Thongloun on being elected as Secretary General of the Party. Thongloun thanked the Thai prime minister for his congratulations on the success of the Party Congress. The two leaders discussed the enhancement of friendly and cooperative ties on the basis of Laos and Thailand being good neighbours, saying this would lead to a strategic partnership for future growth and sustainable development, which would benefit the two countries and contribute to peace, stability and cooperation for development in the region and the world as a whole.

Laos: Oudomxay province expedites smart city plan to spur regional development

VIENTIANE, Jan 23 (Vientiane Times/ANN): Oudomxay is speeding up efforts to create a smart city as part of a master plan to transform the province into a socio-economic development hub for the northern region, the province’s Party leader has said. Addressing the recent 11th Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, provincial Party Committee Secretary Khamphanh Pheuyavong said the planned smart city would be comprehensively systematic. It will comprise industrial, logistics, trade, residential, service and green areas. A survey has been conducted on 12,000 hectares of land in Namor district where the smart city will be built, according to Khamphanh, who is the governor of Oudomxay province.

This policy was one of 10 important topics discussed at a government meeting of cabinet members, the Vientiane mayor and provincial governors, which ended on Friday. Chaired by Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith, the meeting heard a report on a study of ways to convert state assets into capital, acknowledging that there was a lack of consensus among state agencies over the implementation of this policy in the past years, resulting in considerable losses to the nation.

Laos: Many major festivals all cancelled; Covid-19 vaccine to arrive in early 2021

VIENTIANE, Dec 19 (Vientiane Times/ANN): Authorities have ordered the postponement of many popular festivals and their related activities scheduled to take place in the provinces in a recent move to prevent a potential Covid-19 outbreak in Laos. The Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism issued a notice on Friday night, postponing the Vangvieng Music Festival – the popular annual event held annually in the resort district of Vangvieng in Vientiane province. The event had been scheduled for Dec 19 and preparation had already took place. The organisers have set up stages and several performance zones. Tickets went on sale on Dec 7 and many people had bought tickets and booked hotel rooms.
