A young-adult SF novel and the first in the Unstoppable trilogy, centering around a sleeper-agent alien teenager on Earth whose part in an intergalactic war is bigger than she thinks.
“It’s properly, wickedly exciting – I devoured it! How Anders packs so much power and energy into her prose is astonishing. These characters – and the adrenalin, the sheer excitement- will live on in my head long after the last page. Glorious. And the most amazing thing of all is her imagination – to think of a new evil superpower for a villain should be impossible. Completely impossible. Everything’s been done, every sodding thing. Until this arrives. Dazzling. Horrifying. GENIUS. A beautiful book. I loved it, can you tell?!”
Star Wars to
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (not to mention the famous book series that I’m never mentioning again.) One solitary hero faces up to a massive destiny, along with a handful of supporting characters who hang back, do research, and obsess about the hero. The appeal of this sort of story is easy to see: we all want to imagine being powerful, singled out for great things and able to actually do something about huge, intractable problems that threaten our entire world. Most of the time in real life, we all feel helpless in the face of the massive systemic problems that are slowly killing us, so there’s a super-tempting dose of wish-fulfillment in the notion that one person could save us all.

In award-winning SFF writer Charlie Jane Anders’ YA debut, Tina Mains has always been destined for
Victories Greater Than Death. Though she’s spent her seventeen years living like a fairly average white girl earthling, she’s actually a secret clone of the late Captain Argentian, a celebrated alien hero. She’s been living in wait for the sparkling beacon in her chest to call upon her to join the Royal Fleet and save the worlds.
