DESMOND MICHAEL PICKERING February 6, 1939-February 13, 2021
Desmond Pickering, who played a key role in the development of special education in Victoria in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, had died aged 82.
Des – one of five children born to Eileen and Arthur Pickering – spent his early life in Victoria Street, Richmond.
As a young man, he was a well-rounded athlete who played cricket, basketball and trained with the under-19s Richmond football team. He enjoyed his time in the commando unit of the army where the physical challenges of training were to his liking as was jumping out of planes.

Period poverty refers to a lack of access to access to products needed to safely manage menstruation due to poverty, stigma, misinformation or inadequate sanitation. Without safe products, students who menstruate can be forced to stay home and miss class or use items like socks or newspapers to manage their periods. We, the parents and students of the Lalor North Primary School family, together with representatives from local Greek community education groups recognise you as a great supporter of multicultural education and promoter of community languages in the public education system. We praise and commend the State Government for implementing great initiatives to ensure that community languages are well embedded in Victorian Schools and especially Lalor North Primary School.
As far as Melbourne’s Greek Community is concerned, the Greek Bilingual Program at Lalor North Primary School is the pride of bilingual public education and enjoys wide recognition due to its quality outcomes, high calibre of educators and the manner the local community supports and embraces the Program.
