Recent acquisition highlights - December 2018

CBRLife = 堪 生 活  is now being received through legal deposit. Published by a group of young Chinese Australians, it is a ‘magazine for Chinese Australians living in Canberra, recording their lives and memories with connection of this City . While many multicultural publishers are pleased to deposit their works with the Library, others can be less responsive to the Library’s standard ‘official’ approach. There was a good example recently with the acquisition of three volumes of Aodaliya hua ren nian jian = Yearbook of Chinese in Australia, which we believe to be the first Chinese language yearbooks published in Australia. A digger s tale from Newport and Brunswick to Lemnos – The Anzac Voyage of Alec Holland

Young Alec Holland from Brunswick – a 23-year-old former apprentice at Melbourne’s Newport Railway Yards – was one of Australia’s soldiers who came to Lemnos during the Gallipoli campaign. He recorded his experiences in an incredible collection of personal diaries, photographs, drawings and memorabilia, which have been treasured by his family ever since. Recently Alec’s granddaughter, Ann, showed me Alec’s amazing images and writings. As I sat in her living room in suburban Melbourne another link between Lemnos and Australia began to unfold before my eyes. This is the story of Alec Holland’s Lemnos Sapper Alec Frank Holland. From Melbourne to LA in a crate: Man seeks mates he persuaded to ship him around the world in cargo hold

In May 1965, Brian Robson was miserably homesick after working nearly a year in Melbourne, Australia, but he couldn t afford a plane ticket home to Wales. Forlorn and desperate, he came up with a madcap idea: He could fold himself into a crate and ship himself via airfreight to London for a fraction of the fare. That s how 19-year-old Robson ended up inside a wooden crate with his suitcase, a flashlight, a Beatles songbook, a pint of water and an empty bottle to hold his urine. He persuaded two friends in Melbourne to nail him in, and he figured he d be home in 36 hours.
