First Onslow County restaurant workers receive COVID-19 vaccine

Onslow County has officially begun vaccinating restaurant employees against COVID-19 as part of Phase Three of Five in their vaccination plan, a phase which includes front line workers, transportation, hospitality and restaurant workers.  Among the first Onslow County food and beverage workers to receive the COVID-19 vaccine was local Domino’s supervisor Terry Blowers, who got his first shot at the Onslow County Multipurpose Complex Thursday morning in order to protect those around him. “It makes me feel good that all my team members are more safe because I’m not going store to store unvaccinated,” Blowers said. “It wasn’t necessarily about me. It was more about my team members and their families”

Contexts by Rashawn Ray, Fabio Rojas, Victoria Reyes, and Marco Garrido | March 10, 2021 | Winter 2021 From the  Contexts Editors: This past year has been a challenge in many ways. Still, it has been a pleasure to work with the community of writers, anonymous peer reviewers, and staff who make this magazine possible. In 2020, our previous managing editor, Paige Miller, transitioned out of her role, as well as Catherine Bolzendahl and Sabrina Strings transitioned out of their roles as editors of our culture section. We thank each of them for their work with  Contexts. In 2020, we also welcomed Genesis Fuentes and Simone Durham as our new managing editors. In addition, Simone now oversees the culture section and the management of contexts.org.

Vaccines are coming and health departments are ready to go

The only question is, when? And maybe, where. County health departments say they have plans in place for how distribution will take place when their time comes. The Pfizer vaccine was expected to be approved on December 10th when the FDA met to consider its emergency use application; when that approval comes North Carolina is expected to receive upwards of 85,000 doses that will be used for Phase 1 vaccinations – that is, to frontline healthcare workers, nursing home workers, and nursing home residents. That sounds like a lot of vaccines, but it’s got to be divided across the state, and its targeted audience includes a statewide healthcare force of 276,020 and 36,148 residents in certified nursing facilities – that, according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics and KFF.org.
