Oakland mural focusing on hunger part of UN project By KTVU staff A new mural in Oakland focusing on hunger will be officially unveiled. OAKLAND, Calif. - A new mural in Oakland focusing on hunger will be unveiled on Friday.  Artist Victor Ash created the 190-foot tall mural on the Oakland Marriot City Center on Broadway. It s one of six going up in the country. The series is part of the Zero Hunger effort by the United Nations World Food Program, which teamed up with Street Art for Mankind and Kellogg for the project.

Following the collapse of the Nicolae Ceaușescu regime in 1989, the area saw a new wave of demolitions take place as industry collapsed, and factories closed. Aside from the newly built 55,634-seat soccer stadium, the Arena Naționala, abandoned factories were replaced by malls, fast-food restaurants, and gambling parlours. And yet while the Arena attracted major crowds at sporting events and live concerts, Pantelimon remained devoid of many cultural activities. As part of an awareness-raising campaign meant to shed light on the neighbourhood, the first edition of Giants of Pantelimon took place in October 2017.
