Blackburn Town Hall HOUSEHOLDERS in a borough are set to see their council tax rise by at least £52.70 a year.
Blackburn with Darwen Council proposes to increase the charge for its services in 2021/22 by 3.99 per cent. This is made up of 1.99 per cent for general services and two per cent for adult social care. With the additional levies to pay for the police and fire services this means the total council tax bill for the Band A terraced homes which make up the majority of the borough’s housing stock will rise by £52.70 a year, or £1.01 a week, to £1,287.62 for the 12 months from April 1.

BLACKBURN with Darwen Council is being asked to join the campaign to retain the £20 a week increase in Universal Credit payments introduced in response to coronavirus. Two Labour councillors have put down a motion for debate at the authority s Council Forum meeting on Thursday. Borough finance boss and Vicky McGurk and Ewood ward s Cllr Maureen Bateson want the government to extend the rise introduced on March 20 beyond its current April expiry date. Their motion asks for chief executive Denise Park to write to chancellor, Rishi Sunak and prime minister Boris Johnson demanding that the increase is made permanent.
