Readers of The Mail have responded after Furness Academy pupils were encouraged to sign up to voluntary Covid-19 testing in January to help stop the virus from spreading. Headteacher Simon Laheney wrote to parents to say the start of the school term would be delayed by on-site voluntary coronavirus testing for pupils In a letter addressed to parents, Mr Laheney said students will be asked to work remotely at the beginning of term before opting to undergo a Covid-19 test. Those pupils who test negative will then be able to return to school on Thursday, January 7, while those who test positive will be expected to self-isolate as per Government advice for a period of 10 days. The plans are part of a new pilot programme of lateral flow testing set to be introduced in a select group of schools in Cumbria. Kevin Corkill said: I get the It s not 100 per cent accurate but if it catches 40 per cent of positive cases, then that s 40 per cent less people transmitting it in a school environment. Just get on with it, take the test and respond accordingly. It s really not hard is it. Plenty of people are told they need a negative test to be able to work (BAE specifically). If it means it will reduce transmissions, which it will do if everyone takes it, then what is the problem?
