Dr. Hsiu-Li Wang says there are some signs new COVID-19 infections in Waterloo region may be plateauing, but that doesn't mean the community is out of the woods just yet. She says it will still be a number of weeks before the pressure eases for the region's hospitals.
Community spread remains high and even as case numbers stabilize, it will take several weeks for the impact to be felt at local hospitals, Dr. Wang said.
As of Thursday, Region of Waterloo Public Health has reported more than 10,000 new COVID-19 cases in the community this month alone, but it's considered only a fraction of actual case numbers because not everyone can be tested for the virus.
