Asian Americans Living In State College Share Experiences Of Harassment, Hopes For Change

5:19 A recent surge in hate crimes and harassment against Asians and Asian Americans across the country due to COVID-19 has sparked conversation about anti-Asian racism. Members of the State College community shared their experiences of being Asian in Central Pennsylvania with WPSU intern Jade Campos. Some of them will be part of a panel discussion tonight on the topic. Don Hahn has lived in Centre County his entire life. He was born in Bellefonte where he was one of the only Asian American students in his classes.     “If anything, for the first 35 years of my life, I was probably actively rather trying to reject my heritage, Hahn said.

State College Community Land Trust Celebrates 25 Years

The State College Community Land Trust (SCCLT) continues to further its mission of creating and preserving permanently affordable homes in State College after 25 years. In 1996, the founding borough staff, consisting of Lu Hoover, Carl Hess and Shari Keefe, founded the land trust and elected Matt Ford as the first executive director. The 501(c) 3 organization sold the first four homes in 1999. Applicants to buy houses through the land trust are provided education on budgeting and applying for mortgages. The land is leased to the homeowner, reducing the ownership cost, and the house can in the future be sold to another qualifying buyer or back to SCCLT.

Martin W. Grieco Martin W. Grieco, 99, of State College, was an accomplished architect, devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He passed away at home on Jan. 11, 2021. Mr. Grieco was born in Lock Haven, the youngest of seven children, to Vito Anthony and Catherine Byrne Grieco. He graduated in 1939 from Lock Haven High School and immediately joined the U.S. Army. After training at Camp Shelby, Miss. and Camp Sutton, N.C., Martin and other troops sailed on the Queen Elizabeth ship to Scotland. He served as a corporal in the First Battalion, 190th Field Artillery. His tour of duty spanned England, France, Germany, and Central Europe. Campaigns included D-Day invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He completed his military service in 1945.
