The bullying classes – Vicki Ann Cremona

Imagine a normal Maltese family, of average income, who has lived peacefully in their house for years, surrounded by similar buildings, all enjoying sunlight and air. Suddenly, the neighbours’ pretty houses start disappearing, only to be replaced by ugly multi-storey buildings which not only remove the family’s sunlight but also deprive each other of proper natural light. The buildings are so close to each other that people can almost touch fingers across their back balconies. Imagine this family taking their children or elderly parents in their pushchairs or wheelchairs for a walk down the street. The pavements are often too narrow for the wheelchairs to fit and are made even narrower with plant pots or signposts blocking the way. Besides, they are too broken to be able to push the young or elderly and, most of the time, there is no slight ramp to facilitate crossing from one pavement to the other because even when the workers have remembered to put one in on one pavement they

Gaia vs Midas - Vicki Ann Cremona

One of the elements that faces the greatest threat of obliteration in Malta and Gozo is our landscape. It is obvious that the god of money has taken precedence over the physical and mental wellbeing of each one of us. The beauty of our countryside, with its garrigues, plant life and wondrous birds is being sold by the very politicians who should be at the frontline to protect it, and whose unscrupulousness bears no thought for our collective sacrosanct right to enjoy the natural habitat that God has endowed us with.  The soil that our farmers have tilled for centuries is being stolen from them in the name of moneyed progress that resorts to ugly cement constructions in place of fertile land to which they, and all of us Maltese citizens, have a right.

Malta, heaven and back to earth – Vicki Ann Cremona

On Sunday, January 31, Robert Abela had an epiphany: he told us that we are all in heaven. I am not sure what kind of sudden apparition he experienced but I doubt any host of angels came to carry him above. I wonder what has made him feel so ecstatic since I am certain that nothing untoward induced him into this trance-like state. Abela was patting himself on the back for the fact that he has repeatedly ignored urgings from his far more rational health minister, his health authorities, his doctors and anyone else with some sense or grey matter. Despite all advice to the contrary, he has never discouraged any sort of gathering, with the result that the numbers of those suffering from COVID-19 have gone up so drastically, that he now has to take measures to curb carnival, to prevent yet more victims from going to heaven or suffering purgatory on earth.
