with the university of delaware, sir, thank you very much. thank you for having me. rick: our pleasure. we were just just thinking about the frozen drinks you could be enjoying. makes you think about it, hot weather, summer, ice island. rick: rick: margarita. jenna: you said it, i didn t how does this sound? sniff inspector? the bp oil spill now has blood hounds to sniff out contaminated seafood before it hits store shelves. we ll tell you how they re doing that, next. can t you smell that smell? ooh, that smell.
discovery near greenland, a giant chunk of ice, four times the size of manhattan, breaks off from one of the world s biggest glaciers, the incredible details on the world s new ice island, just ahead.
it s this area in greenland. what we re seeing here is so incredibly massive. according to researchers in the united states, it is a 100-square-mile basically ice island. it s four times the size of manhatt manhattan, about half the height of the empire state building. it s the biggest piece of ice to break off since 1962. let me tell you one more thing about it while we look at it. they re saying the fresh water stored in this ice island could keep the delaware or hudson rivers flowing for more than two years. could also keep all u.s. public tap water flowing for 120 days. i want to show you on the map what we re talking about because we re talking about this section of graeenland here. this is the area where that chunk has fallen off. i ll show you in a second sort of the size of it. the concern the researchers have is if it starts working its way down here to the bay area, this
massive chunk of ice could break up into other islands, and it s possible over time, it could take a couple years, that it could as a huge chunk work its way into the atlantic, which can cause problems for the atlantic, affect travel and all sorts of things if it works its way down here. they re not sure where it s going to go. but the researchers who found this, particularly this image here, where it says ice island right there, this is the satellite image. you can see greenland right here, this is the size of the chunk they re talking about. we re talking about a massive chunk of ice, one of the biggest we ve seen in years and years and years. so obviously, the potential problems for this pretty huge and that s what people are watching right now. and a lot of people are worried in the scientific community that eventually we re going to have an ice-free summer in the an arctic, and i suppose
a massive ice break created an ice island and it could cause problems in the atlantic. i am going to talk you through it. that was a nice advertisement for cnn mugs. that was a nice close-up of your mug there. it s interesting. we were talking about what the most popular stories are online, and the most popular by far is this story about the glacer. what happened is researchers at the university of delaware says 100 square mile ice island broke off from the glacer.
