After several years of agitation for replacement of service chiefs, following heightened insecurity in the country, President Muhammadu Buhari finally relieved them of their duties yesterday.
President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo General Assembly Worldwide, Basil Onuorah, has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to appoint an officer of South-East origin as the next Inspector-General of Police.
Onuorah made the call in a statement on Wednesday in reaction to the appointment of new Service Chiefs.
He commended Buhari for yielding to Nigerians’ demand.
Onuorah charged the new military chiefs to get prepared for “the onerous task and challenges of insecurity in our country”.
He, however, lamented that despite the cries of Igbo people, the President failed to pick a Service Chief from the South-East.
“There is no Igbo man among the newly appointed Service Chiefs. Those who claim Chief of Defence Staff, Maj. Gen. Leo Irabor is an Igbo man who should tell us if IRABOR is an Igbo name.
According to him, “There has been a lot of fake news all around and I wanted to be sure that Mr. President clearly have first hand information from me, which I did. We also exchanged ideas on what we need to do better, some of the programmes we have put in place to ensure that this security issue is tackled. So, that’s basically why I came here.”
On the specific issues he discussed with the president, he said: “Well, one of the issues I discussed with Mr. President is that Oyo State land mass is quite big, Oyo State is close to 29,000 square kilometers. If you take all the states in the south east geo-political zone of Nigeria, they are still not as big as Oyo State. And the state right now only has two Mobile Police Squadrons.

The Prominent Civil Rights Advocacy group-: HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (HURIWA) has lamented that President Muhammadu Buhari made changes to the offices of service Chiefs without accommodating the interest of the Igbo Speaking States of the South East of Nigeria even after five years of his systematic marginalization of the South East of Nigeria in the scheme of top security Architectures.
HURIWA reacted against the backdrop of the new appointments in which all the service chiefs deemed to have overstayed retired and were relieved of their positions just as the Rights Advocacy group HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (HURIWA) said it was patently obvious that President Muhammadu Buhari hates Ndigbo otherwise he could have used the opportunities offered by the vacancies in the positions of service Chiefs to prove naysayers wrong that he does n
