A survey conducted by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has revealed a decline in the stray dog population in the city. The survey estimates that there are nearly 300,000 stray dogs in Bengaluru, a decrease of 10% compared to 2019. The decline is attributed to the effective implementation of Animal Birth Control measures. The survey also showed a decrease in reported dog-bite cases and cases of rabid dog bites.
The step, taken under the National Animal Disease Control Programme of the Union government, will result in doubling the farmers’ income by 2025 by improving the health status and productivity of the livestock population, as per the Chandigarh department of animal husbandry and fisheries
The census results also show that nearly 72% of the total stray dog population in the city is already neutered. While nearly 75% of the male dogs are neutered, as many as 72.11% of the female stray dog population has undergone Animal Birth Control (ABC) surgery.
