California Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed a bill that will help LGBTQ military veterans discharged under "don't ask, don't tell" policies to reclaim their benefits.
Military Times reports that 14,000 service men and women were forced out of the military because they admitted their sexual orientation as gay or lesbian under Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.
These vets are eligible to upgrade their discharge status to receive benefits, but many have found the process difficult. The new California program will help.
