Leechburg Council approves high school field improvements

Louis B. Ruediger | Tribune-Review   TribLIVE s Daily and Weekly email newsletters deliver the news you want and information you need, right to your inbox. Dozens of Leechburg High School students and parents, decked out in Blue Devils gear, crowded outside a borough council meeting Tuesday. They huddled on the steps and crammed into the doorway of the overflowing gallery, there to support a proposal by the school district to upgrade stormwater management at Veterans Field Sports Complex. “I don’t want to go out there, ready to play a game, worried I’m going to get hurt or my teammates are going to get hurt,” said Thomas Burke, a Leechburg junior, who went to the meeting to advocate for the field improvements. “Every kid out there loves to play sports. They love to go out and do what they do.

Council gets first look at land development bylaws

The amended bylaw would stipulate a maximum of five members instead of a minimum of five. Also, if a developer submits an application that warrants a variance to allow for issues such as additional floor space or building height, there could be a 10 per cent variance, which land development services manager Richard Neufeld said is common. The current zoning bylaw does not allow for any variance powers. Should a variance request be in excess of 10 per cent and appear reasonable, the only option would be through the development appeals board.   The other bylaw is for a lane closure behind Westview Place.  Neufeld said council and administration, along with the adjoining five landowners, have agreed in principle to begin the process of formally closing the laneway, which runs south of Westview Place. The next step is to add the north four metres of the closed laneway to the adjoining lots and the southern two metres of laneway to the adjoining park land.

Judge: No work on entertainment pier as lawsuit is pending

Judge: No work on entertainment pier as lawsuit is pending A judge has issued an order that blocks a company from starting construction on an entertainment pier on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Harrison County Chancery Court Judge Jennifer Schloegel issued the temporary restraining order Wednesday in a lawsuit that the Mississippi Secretary of State’s Office filed in July 2019, the Sun Herald reported. The state argues that before a pier can be built at the end of Veterans Avenue in Biloxi, a public trust tidelands lease is required through the secretary of state. The city disagrees. A hearing is set for May 5.

Cove American Legion holds open house to raise awareness of its programs

Members of Copperas Cove’s American Legion Post 582 are ready, willing, and able to help area veterans and even needy civilians, but despite being located next door to one of the largest military installations in the country, many people are unaware the organization even exists. “The American Legion (chartered by Congress in 1919) is one of the oldest military organizations,” said Copperas Cove post commander David Harris, a 14-year Army vet. “We’re proud of that, and we want to continue to build more — help more. We don’t want to stay stagnant, and the only way we can do it is to get new members. A lot of us are getting older.
