The Maharashtra government has given approval for the construction of two multi-storey prisons in Mumbai, the first of their kind in India. The prisons, which will be located in Mankhurd, are expected to ease overcrowding in the existing jails in the state. The first prison will be built on a five-acre plot in Mandale and the second on a 22-acre plot nearby, and together they will be able to house 5,000 inmates.
