Council Candidates Thank Voters After Election With Higher Turnout - MyVeronaNJ

Verona voters went to the polls in greater numbers on Tuesday, sending incumbent Jack McEvoy back to the Town Council for a second term and electing newcomers Dr. Christopher Tamburro and Cynthia Holland. According to the unofficial vote count, 2,508 of Verona’s 11,731 registered voters cast a ballot, a 21.4% turnout overall. The count in any election is unofficial until certified by the Essex County Clerk. Only 19.9% of Verona’s registered voters voted in the last Council election in 2019. In 2017, some 24.5% of registered voters cast ballots in that year’s Council election. The turnout this year was highest in District #6, which votes at Forest Avenue School, and lowest at District #9, which votes at Verona High School. Between 2% and 5% of voters in each district opted to vote by mail.

Pool Operations To Return To Normal This Summer - MyVeronaNJ

The Verona Town Council voted Monday night to approve rates for the Verona Pool for this summer and to affirm that the pool will once again open on Memorial Day. The 2021 pool rates are about a 2% increase from 2019; rates were lowered last summer because the pool season was shortened by the pandemic. For 2021, Family memberships will be $485, while Family with Babysitter will be $590. The Couples badge will be $450, Parent/Child will be $425 and an individual membership will be $320. The cost of Senior Citizen membership will be unchanged at $165 per person.  The pool will be open on weekends only as of Memorial Day; the full season begins after school ends in June. Pool hours are Monday through Thursday from noon to 8 p.m., and Friday from noon to 9 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, the pool is open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., with an adults-only hour from 10 to 11 a.m. both days. Verona is not offering an evenings-only membership this year.

Green Energy Program Now Offers 100% Renewable Power - MyVeronaNJ

Two years ago, Verona unveiled a way for residents to get more of their electricity from renewable energy than they could get from PSE&G. The initial Sustainable Essex Alliance contract expired in December, and the new contract offers homeowners a chance to get all of their electricity from renewable sources. Renewable energy is power produced by sunlight, wind, rain, tides, plants, algae or geothermal heat, sources that cause less damage to the environment than fossil fuels. Coal, natural gas, and oil damage the environment when they are mined or extracted, and when they are burned to generate electricity they give off gases that are a major factor in climate change.
