The white cane is the international symbol of independence, mobility and safety for people who are blind or visually impaired. Ninety years ago, the idea for a white cane to assist blind people originated simultaneously in Peoria, Illinois and Paris, France. In Peoria it was the local Lions Club President who came up with the idea as a way to meet Helen Keller’s challenge to all Lions Clubs to help defeat blindness.
Seventy years ago, the Verona Lions Club was started as a way for local residents and business owners to fight blindness and, in general, to serve others, as well as supporting Lions charitable efforts to help others in need wherever they may be.
