After hosting virtual a commencement ceremony for Spring 2020 graduates due to COVID-19 restrictions, LeMoyne-Owen College will host its 151st Commencement in person at The Orpheum on Saturday, May 8 at 10 a.m. Erik Moses, the first Black president of a NASCAR track, the Nashville Superspeedway, will give the keynote address to the more than 100 graduates. Additionally, for the first time in LeMoyne-Owen College history, three students will be named class valedictorian, all earning 4.0 GPAs. Sainna Christian, Student Government Association president; Aura Lopez, and Avianne Robinson, Miss LOC will also address their fellow graduates.

U of M President David Rudd will depart presidency

University of Memphis President M. David Rudd will leave his position as president of the university, he announced Wednesday. Rudd will remain president for the upcoming academic year, according to the university, departing in May 2022 before a year-long sabbatical abroad. He plans to transition to a faculty position in 2023.  As a tenured member of the faculty, I have decided to return to the important work of teaching, scientific research and clinical care I set aside 15 years ago when I transitioned to senior administration, Rudd said in his announcement. I shared with our Trustees that I am willing to stay on as long as needed to allow for a successful national search and provide for an orderly transition in 2022.

Bennett-Fairs will become the school’s 13th president when she takes over January 5th. Her priorities for the historically black institution, include recruiting and retaining students, along with shoring up revenue and building relationships throughout the community and beyond – all of which impressed the college’s board of trustees.

The LeMoyne-Owen College Board of Trustees has voted to appoint Vernell Bennett-Fairs, Ed.D. as the College’s 13th president. Dr. Bennett-Fairs has over 25 years of experience in higher education, most recently serving as vice-president of Student Affairs at Delta State University in Mississippi for four and a half years. At Delta State University, her career accomplishments include increasing student enrollment, realigning the college’s scholarship budget and assisting in attracting students from over 50 countries. Dr. Bennett-Fairs also served in a similar role at HBCU, Kentucky State University, where she instituted innovative recruitment strategies such as a coordinated recruitment program and faculty teaching days in high schools.
