i came down about 10:00 and  spent 15 minutes with enterprise saying good-bye. we ve had a wonderful time being the care taker and steward of this orbiter and it will be sad to see her go. reporter: enterprise was a prototype and never flew into space and is headed to a museum in new york. discovery flew 39 missions and is considered the work horse of the shuttle fleet. it s really once in a lifetime. the fact i m standing here and it is kind of surrealistic i m looking at it. reporter: michael worked with the shuttle program and came up from houston for this. it s been part of my life. i ve wanted to be an astronaut since i was a kid and so my entire adult life the space shuttle has been the space program. seeing the first one here at the smithsonian is kind of like the end of this chapter of my life and now looking forward to what comes next. the experience did not disappoint. discovery flanked by its former commanders and astronauts was towed on to the museu
