Vermont governor vetoes rental housing registry bill

MONTPELIER Gov. Phil Scott on Friday vetoed legislation that would have set up a rental registry, and statewide system to enforce property safety standards.
The governor said that the bill, SB 79, would “reduce the number of housing options for Vermonters at a time when we are grappling with a critical housing shortage.”
“Most agree we suffer from a critical housing shortage for middle income, low income and homeless Vermonters, but the solution is not more regulation,” Scott said in his veto message to legislators.
Scott argued that adding additional housing restrictions and costs would discourage “everyday Vermonters” from renting out their homes, rooms or summer cabins as a way to supplement their income.
The need for
safe and decent housing is a daily news topic these days as is the incredible shortage of available housing. We have all heard stories or had first-hand experience with housing that is not safe and habitable â with plumbing or electrical problems, roof leaks, or inadequate heat or ventilation. A bill which will directly address this is currently in the Governorâs hands. S.79, the Rental Housing Safety Bill, will help towns enforce the Rental Housing Health Code in an efficient and low-cost manner. We urge the Governor to sign this critical and timely bill.
The Vermont Affordable Housing Coalition represents more than 90 organizations that create, manage, and promote affordable housing, and we strongly support S.79, the statewide rental housing safety bill.
