Description
This is Johann Theodore De Bry s 1613 edition of Hessel Gerritz chart of the North Atlantic and the Canadian Maritimes, based on the reports of Henry Hudson s fourth, final voyage. Predated only by Gerritsz much rarer 1612 issue, this is the first map of Hudson Bay and the surrounding region, and remained the best chart of the northern regions of Canada for decades. The chart reaches from the British Isles to the western shore of James Bay, extending from 50° - 70° N.

Westerners were prominent in Ayutthaya, the former capital of the kingdom of Siam, in centuries past. They left historical records, architecture, language and cultural links of their contact with Iudea, as it was known at the time. Today they help us understand the area s history and Thailand s policies on international relations.
Amsterdam has usurped London to become Europe’s biggest hub for trading shares. It is quite a shift for a city that was fifth behind Paris, Frankfurt and Milan only two months ago, while for the UK this is one of numerous recent developments that highlight the downsides of leaving the EU. So how did this happen, and where do things go from here?
First a bit of history. At the beginning of the 17th century, the financial centre of the world was not London, New York or Tokyo. It was an exchange building built by merchants on the River Amstel, Amsterdam. This was the time of the Dutch Golden Age, when its science, culture and commerce were among the most celebrated in the world.

If last week’s stock market frenzy surrounding GameStop had any public value, it might be that it served as an introduction for many to the once-obscure concept of shorting stocks.
While even most non-investors understand the basic premise of buying shares in the hope stocks will rise, shorting shares that is, investing in a stock’s decline is a much more esoteric practice best left to the professionals.
Much of shorting’s mystery comes from its complicated mechanics. To short a stock, investors borrow shares they believe will decline with the agreement to return them at a set time, then sell them on the market. When it comes time to return the borrowed shares, the investors buy them back from the market theoretically at a lower price and pocket the difference. It’s a risky maneuver because, while conventional stock investors can only lose their initial investment, a short investor’s losses can be infinite. Again, something best left to the pros.
