Venice holds firm on large event ban over COVID-19 concerns

VENICE – Merchants who have relied on sales to people who frequented larger special events – notably Howard Alan-hosted arts festivals – are still hopeful that the city of Venice will greenlight larger gatherings, but Assistant City Manager Len Bramble said the risks of COVID-19 still are too great. “In our heads and our hearts, we’re not ready yet,” Bramble said Friday afternoon, when asked about the prospect after participating in a small and socially distanced unveiling of an interactive sea turtle sculpture at Venice Beach. “Really, we spent a good amount of time comparing statistics and other things between Dec. 8, when the city last evaluated this, and we had to say ‘no’ then, to now,” he continued on Friday. “Yesterday was the most recent data.”

Venice council to consider new development service fee schedule

VENICE – Venice City Council members will consider a proposed new schedule of fees for Development Services, something that had been planned for last March but was bumped because of the COVID-19 pandemic. One thing prompting the discussion is an analysis by MGT Consulting Group that showed that, while building permit fees bring in more than required to service clients, fees related to the planning department do not cover even half the cost of the work required. The study involved a review of financial reports, as well as conversations to determine how staff does its work and development review of a cost model.

Venice Museum exhibit highlights Sarasota County centennial

VENICE – A new photo exhibit that opens Tuesday at the Venice Museum, “Celebrating a Centennial: The Origins of Sarasota County,” looks back at the era when Sarasota County split off from Manatee County, with a decidedly Venice twist. “The Venice district was the only district that did not vote to separate from Manatee County,” noted Venice Historical Resources Manager Harry Klinkhamer. The June 1921 vote passed overwhelmingly, 508 to 154, but in Venice, it failed with a tally of 22 votes for and 30 against, according to the front page of the Sarasota County Times. The county’s official founding date is July 1, 2021. “Keep in mind it’s 1921; there weren t a whole lot of people out there,” said Klinkhamer, who added that only male property owners voted.

Tropical shirt highlights lost buildings of Venice

Staff Report VENICE The Venice Museum and Venice Heritage are selling “Lost Buildings of Venice” tropical shirts. Venice Heritage commissioned a master Hawaiian print artist to design the shirts, which display lost architecture in the city. The shirts are made in the USA from fine high-thread count combed cotton and feature a matched pocket (on men’s shirts) and authentic coconut buttons.  Sizes range from S-2XL for women and S-3XL for men. The shirt depicts seven buildings in Venice and one in Nokomis: Venice Beach Casino, Ringling Circus Arena, Gulf Theatre, Hotel Villa Nokomis, Park View Hotel, Horse & Chaise, Venice-Nokomis Presbyterian Church Drive-In, and Venice-Nokomis Bank. They are decorated with the John Nolen Plan of Venice, shark’s teeth, and the official city flower, a hibiscus.
