Catholic Bishop welcomes progress in cause of priest who sought conversion of England

LONDON: A Bishop on Sunday welcomed a step forward in the beatification cause of a convert to Catholicism who worked tirelessly for the conversion of England. Bishop Mark Davies of Shrewsbury said on Feb. 21 that Fr. Ignatius Spencer could serve as a model for Catholics as England struggles to overcome the coronavirus pandemic.  “Venerable Ignatius Spencer offers a striking example as we emerge from the pandemic never to be daunted by difficulties, rather to calmly continue our mission confident we each have a contribution to make to rebuilding the life of the Church and society,” he said. Davies made the comment the day after Pope Francis recognized Spencer’s heroic virtues. Following the publication of a decree on Feb. 20, Spencer is now known as “Venerable.”

For the last five years Fr Daly has been Episcopal Vicar for Formation, heading up a department of the Diocese of Salford on behalf of the Bishop, dealing with all aspects of Adult Formation across the 90+ parishes of the Salford Diocese. After leaving his Heywood role on Tuesday (26 January), Fr Daly will now be doing this role full-time based at the Diocesan Offices at Salford Cathedral. Fr Daly came to Heywood on 30 June 2004, becoming parish priest of St Joseph’s, succeeding Father Duggan.

He was one of the outstanding Catholic priests of his generation, and his early death has robbed the Church of one who would surely have played a major role in future years. He was born in London on November 28 1960 and educated at the Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School near Holland Park. Feeling strongly called to the priesthood, he wanted to enter the seminary, but was advised by Cardinal Hume to go to university and see something of the world first.
