Rajya Sabha MP and former deputy chief minister of Uttar Pradesh Dr Dinesh Sharma visited the Vellalore dump yard in Coimbatore to address complaints about its hazardous impact on public health. He reviewed the progress of clearing legacy waste and land retrieval. The MP assured residents that he would inform the Union ministry of environment, the ministry of law, and the National Green Tribunal about the situation. The Kurichi-Vellalore Pollution Prevention Action Committee demanded the closure of the dump yard due to foul smell and contaminated water. Dr Sharma promised to ensure the dump yard receives the best waste management infrastructure.
The Coimbatore municipal corporation is planning to upgrade the waste management infrastructure by replacing the existing biomining machinery with a new one at the Vellalore dump yard.
