los angeles. breaking overnight the capture of the prime suspect in the d.c. mansion murders after a week on the run, 34-year-old daron wint was arrested in northeast washington. he was taken into custody late last night along with several others. the ex-con accused of brutally killing savvas savopoulos, his wife amy and their son and housekeeper, then setting the family s $4.5 million home on fire. the arrests came after police tracked him to new york city and back. got to a situation where we could successfully take him down and we did our standard practice vehicle pin maneuver and we were able to safely pin the vehicles both vehicles and place him under arrest. the detectives say dna from pizza crust found in the home led them to the suspect. wint is a welder who once worked for the victim s iron company. so far no word on motive. in washington, the gyrocopter pilot accused of flying into the most restricted air space in the country has pled not guilty. douglas hughes faci
but over the past couple of days it s clear that he became suspect number one and they used what they called overwhelming force and numbers to arrest him. we followed him for about four or five miles and did a wacky u turn. thought they were being tailed. we got to a situation where we could successfully take him down and we did our standard practice vehicle pin maneuver. reporter: and according to the affidavit wint took the family essentially hostage the night before the murders and fire, ordered a dominoes pizza to the home, and that is how they tracked down his saliva on the dna. the other thing that came to the home delivered bay personal assistant to one of the victims $40,000 in cash, and they believe they found some of that cash with wint when he was arrested. another highlight from these charges documents is police say what we have believed all along
oh okay. you wanted to hit a red light to get out and stop them? correct. then you moved in for the arrest. tell us about that. we got to a point where we wanted to get a helicopter because it was two vehicles. we wait. why would you want a helicopter? we hadn t done a vehicle pin maneuver on two vehicles and wasn t sure which wint was in. didn t want to stop one, have the other get away. find the chopper while you stopped one car. it was a truck. right. we were concerned if we tried to pin a truck a big box truck, it might plow right through us and get away. we called p it g countg police and they provided a helicopter within minutes. what a pin maneuver? vehicle pin blocking maneuver got in between the two vehicles a choke point like a red light, we have the front and back cars actually pinch in the

good morning. i m carol costello. thank you so much for joining me. we begin in the nation s capital where a suspected killer linked to the horrific slaying of a prominent d.c. family is behind bars. a massive manhunt ending where it began. overnight police arrested 34-year-old daron wint along with five suspected accomplices. wint is accused of torturing and killing a husband and wife their 10-year-old son and the family s housekeeper. authorities were able to track him down in new york but when they got to new york he was already on the run. it was back in washington where that crime was committed that police closed in on the suspect. we also called the prince george s county maryland police department and they had a helicopter in the air in five minutes. once we reached the location in d.c. where we felt we could take him down we did a vehicle pin maneuver on both vehicles and were able to arrest everyone. cnn s tom foreman is covering
