Amazon is rolling out new technology allowing customers at some Whole Food stores to pay for their groceries by waving their palms across a scanner.
The pay-by-palm service will launch first at a Whole Foods location in Seattle, near the company’s headquarters, Amazon announced Wednesday, according to the Associated Press.
Amazon plans to roll out the technology, known as Amazon One, in eight stores in the Seattle area in the coming months. The service will allow customers to hold their hands above a scanner that will read their unique palm print and charge the credit or debit card linked to their hand.

Amazon is continuing to expand the number of stores offering palm payments, which are billed as a convenient and safe way to check out during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The palm payment system is called Amazon One, and it initially rolled out in September 2020. Then in February, Amazon One was introduced at Amazon Go, Go Grocery, Amazon Books, and Amazon 4-star stores. Now Whole Foods stores are getting the contactless payment option.
The benefits of Amazon One during a pandemic are clear. Payment only requires a customer to present their palm over a reader for it to be recognized. There s no need to take a phone or wallet out of your pocket and nothing to touch. Rolling the system out at Whole Foods was inevitable; the only surprising thing is the speed at which Amazon is expanding the system.
Amazon is bringing its Amazon One palm scanner to select Whole Foods as a payment option
Amazon is bringing its new biometric device, the Amazon One scanner, to Whole Foods store. The retail giant this past fall introduced the Amazon One scanner, which allows shoppers to enter a store by having their palm scanned. The customer’s palm signature can be associated with their payment mechanism in a retail environment like Amazon’s cashier-less Amazon Go stores, where customers shop, then walk out without having to go through a traditional checkout process. Now at Whole Foods, the Amazon One scanner will be added as a payment option at checkout.
