Women MPs from Croatian leftist and liberal parties have called on the public to join protest rallies to be held in several cities across the country on Thursday evening in support of Mirela Cavajda and all women who are denied their legal right to abortion and other forms of medical care.
Dario Hrebak, leader of the Croatian Social-Liberal Party, a junior partner in the ruling coalition, said on Tuesday it was important for changes to the abortion law "not to be restrictive," voicing concern that the initiative to amend the law "offered a topic for discussion to those wishing to ban abortion."
The Social Democratic Party, the GLAS party and two associations on Thursday asked the Health Ministry to urgently enable the exercise of the legal right to abortion after the public found out that Zagreb hospitals have refused a woman's request to abort an unborn child with a malignant tumor.
