CALGARY – A southern Alberta woman who stabbed her common-law partner to death has been unsuccessful in having her conviction overturned.
Vanessa Poucette killed Brennon Twoyoungmen during an argument in Morley, west of Calgary, in October 2016 and was sentenced to two years in prison and three years of probation.
She admitted to stabbing Twoyoungmen, and the sole question at trial was whether she had acted in self-defence.

Despite misstating the law, a judge’s decision to reject a Morley woman’s self-defence claim was correct, the Alberta Court of Appeal ruled Monday in upholding her manslaughter conviction.
A three-member appeal panel agreed with defence counsel Alain Hepner that Justice David Gates erred when he said a temporary residence is not the same as one’s home.

But the appeal judges said the mistake was inconsequential because it wasn’t the basis for Gates rejecting Vanessa Poucette’s claim she was acting in self-defence when she fatally stabbed her abusive common-law husband while staying at her cousin’s residence.
