THE SPENDING
There were some cuts such as $500,000 for repairs and upgrades for public works, like roads, bridges and other city assets but there was also new investment approved by city council.
In a bid to help London harness economic benefits of the film industry, politicians voted nearly unanimously to spend $300,000 annually on a film office and a film commissioner. That’s even more than the $200,000 proposed by city staff. The funds to boost London’s profile in the film world will come from a reserve fund, however, rather than adding to this year’s tax hike.

A defamation lawsuit launched by former city councillor Virgina Ridley highlights a broader need to crack down on political “cheap shots” that erode public trust, one observer says.
Ridley is suing a political consulting firm that admitted to creating an attack website about her during the 2018 civic election campaign, and four people she alleges were involved, seeking $400,000 and other damages for what her statement of claim describes as a “lingering and enduring impact.”
