Perinton looks to breathe easier with respite from NYC trash

PHOTO BY JEREMY MOULE Perinton Supervisor Ciaran Hanna said the town has developed an eight-point plan to control odors coming from Waste Management s High Acres Landfill. If Perinton officials have their way, the amount of New York City trash that Waste Management could legally dump at the High Acres Landfill would be cut in half under a proposed agreement between the company and the town. In practical terms, the deal, if agreed to by the company, would mean the landfill would take in roughly 100,000 fewer tons of trash than it did last year, according to town officials. Capping the amount of trash from New York City transported to High Acres by rail is one component of an eight-point odor control plan developed by the town for High Acres, which extends into neighboring Macedon. In a recent update to the Alpena Municipal Council, economic development guru Mike Mahler listed many: ∫ Jeff Konczak’s plans to renovate the State and Royal Knight theaters and the former Antique Mall along 2nd Avenue downtown ∫ The new hospital tower under construction ∫ The renovation of Alpena Community College’s Van Lare Hall ∫ Discussion between Alpena Public Schools and Aldi for a grocer at the current site of the school district’s bus garage.
