Baby Ivakele Xolose, from the Western Cape, was reported missing on Monday and found dead on Tuesday. A Johannesburg woman, Yolandi Botes, also went missing at the end of last month when she took an Uber and her body was discovered in the Vaal River at the beginning of this month. Jacs Thomas, co-founder and director at Pink Ladies, which keeps a database of missing people, said missing cases across South Africa have exploded. ALSO READ: Community scammed.

Children’s rights should not just be recognised on special days Share Cape Town - Children’s rights activists are calling for an end to violence against children, ahead of Child Protection Week. Western Cape Child Commissioner Christina Nomdo said children’s rights were interdependent and indivisible, and children should enjoy the right to be protected from harm, the right to the provision of their basic needs and to participate in decisions affecting their lives. Nomdo said this should happen every day, “not only during special days like designated child protection weeks”. The annual Child Protection Week campaign, which raises awareness of the rights of children, is expected to start on Sunday.

There was a scenario that South Africans could wake up on Thursday morning with the ANC and its coalition partners removed from power in Knysna and Beaufort West. But the party retained the Beaufort West seat and won the Hornlee seat in Knysna from the DA.  The DA was again stymied by losing votes to smaller parties appealing to coloured voters, and was also affected by a former DA ward councillor retaining her seat as an ANC candidate. In by-elections late in 2019 there was a clear pattern of former DA voters lending their support to parties like GOOD in George and Vredenburg, and the Patriotic Alliance and Al Jama-ah in Johannesburg.

File photo. Image: Stephanie de Sakutin The ruling ANC has again had an impressive showing in the latest by-elections, snatching a ward from the official opposition DA in its Western Cape stronghold. Results from Wednesday s by-elections show that the ANC continues to do well despite its internal woes. The Electoral Commission has not yet released the official results of the by-elections. It is expected to announce them at a press conference on Thursday afternoon.
